Why AmeriCorps Matters
AmeriCorps is a vital part of our work at Boxwood — providing critical mentoring, academic support, and life skills development to students who need it most. At one of our partner high schools, many students attend night school as part of behavior intervention plans or expulsion prevention due to academic struggles. Before AmeriCorps, there were no workshops, no college preparation programs, and no enrichment activities for these youth. Students simply completed computer-based assignments and left for the day. Thanks to the dedication of our AmeriCorps members, that has changed dramatically. Today, members are:- Mentoring students one-on-one, helping them set and achieve academic and personal goals.
- Hosting college readiness workshops, giving students a real pathway toward higher education.
- Coordinating workshops on substance abuse awareness and its impact on academic success.
- Running recreational activities to foster healthy peer connections and emotional wellness.
Beyond the school walls, members are helping to bridge even greater opportunities. Through their efforts, Boxwood now offers off-site programming at our main center, where students participate in hands-on activities like an Apple Repair Class — learning technical skills and preparing for the Apple Technician Certification exam. A Drone Class, where scholars can obtain their professional licensure and fly indoor drones. A Saturday Motivational Series with guest speakers for wealth-building initiatives and decision making workshops.
AmeriCorps members are not just filling gaps — they are transforming lives. We incorporate our AmeriCorps members across every facet of our programs. Not only for them to serve the community, but for us to serve them. Their time, energy, passion, is very valuable to us, and we at Boxwood wish to do our best to give back to them!

“Before I became an AmeriCorps member, the agency did not offer support services for teen parents, and there were no similar services available in the local community. About half of the students in our GED program are parents themselves, so I’m proud to contribute to helping young families build economic and emotional stability.
AmeriCorps has also enabled me to develop professional skills, build leadership experience, and receive valuable coaching — all of which are preparing me for success in my career after my service ends.”
