Union County Community Drop-In Center (CDIC) program is taking flight this summer.
There is still time for Union County youth to register for the upcoming two weeks of nonstop aviation activities across our CDIC sites. Youth will explore what keeps a plane in motion, learn the structure of an aircraft, build remote-control planes, and work together on a team project to create a large model plane.
This hands-on aviation experience is designed for Union County residents ages 10–18 and students in grades 6–12. Space is very limited and registration is first come, first served.
“It gives me great joy to watch our girls build model planes,” said Marie Thelusma-Chase, Founder and CEO of Boxwood Learning Center. “One mother shared that after her daughter attended one of our prior Maker Days and built a plane, she spent time in her room flying the remote plane. It reminded me of childhood, when children flew kites and experienced the wonder of watching something they built take flight.”
“This program gives youth the chance to see aviation not as something far away, but as something they can touch, build, understand, and explore,” said Leonna Sylvester, CEO of InnoGenius, project partner for the aviation program. “When young people build with their own hands, they begin to see themselves differently.”
All CDIC sites will participate in aviation activities as part of this summer learning experience. The goal is to help young people connect science, engineering, creativity, teamwork, and career exploration in a way that feels exciting, hands-on, and possible.
Before young people can imagine themselves in aviation, someone has to place the plane in their hands.
